Stories and Art
by Cathryn RakiCh
Cathryn Rakich is a writer and ceramic artist whose work celebrates the deep and often surprising connections between people and animals. Her debut book, Thirty Days to Home (Simon & Schuster) explores the journey of rescue, healing, and belonging. Through her monthly column in Inside Sacramento and her handcrafted animal-inspired ceramics, Cathryn shares stories that honor animals, both wild and domestic, and celebrate their beauty, grace and intelligence.

The Book
A moving debut about second chances, Thirty Days to Home follows a grieving woman who rediscovers purpose—and unexpected love—through her connection with a stray dog she meets on the streets of picturesque Puerto Escondido, Mexico.

The Ceramics
After graduating from Sacramento State University, art fell to the wayside as Cathryn pursued a career in writing, editing and communications. Fast forward 35 years, when she retired with free time on her hands. Ceramics called to her.

The Animals
Animals & Their Allies features monthly stories from Cathryn’s column in Inside Sacramento celebrating animals—both wild and domestic—and the people who advocate for them.

Misfit Mutts
Founded in 2026 by Cathryn, Misfit Mutts Dog Rescue is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing dogs who are not deemed adoptable and are at risk of euthanasia at animal shelters in the greater Sacramento area.
As a foster-based rescue group, we can share detailed information about their personalities, behaviors, likes and dislikes with potential adopters.
